Book Review: A Very Gidi Christmas
Author: Tomilola Coco Adeyemo 🇳🇬
Type of work (Genre): Novel
Number of pages: 317
Own or Borrowed: own, purchased from The Word Playce

Overall Impressions: in the end, I had mixed feelings about this book. It started out really great and set my expectations quite high. However, after the first few chapters, it started to read more like a Nollywood script than a novel. Given the author’s background in Nollywood, it wasn’t surprising. Different genres of writing each have their own skills requirements and being proficient in one genre does not automatically guarantee proficiency in another. This is where the story fell flat for me. It could have benefited from about 100-150 more pages that allowed for greater character development. There were some strong and interesting characters that needed that touch to be really compelling. My critique notwithstanding, it was an enjoyable story that was quite easy to read. I particularly liked that the main character was a modern day media professional navigating serious scandal in the social media space.
Something that stood out: the pacing of the story. It was quite brisk and didn’t dilly dally. However, as much as this was a strength at the beginning of the story, I wish it slowed down a little in the middle to allow for better character development.
Overall Rating: 🖋🖋🖋.5 (out of 5 fountain pens).
Recommend or nah: I recommend it! It’s a cute story.
