Overall Impressions: I didn’t expect to love this book as much as I did. Quite the enjoyable read on a subject matter we’re all impacted by in one way or another; 419 scams. This book is told from the perspective of a scammer and takes you through his life’s journey to arriving at his scamming ways. You walk away feeling sympathetic and possibly empathetic to the scammers even though what they are doing is wrong. Their actions are justifiable albeit contemptible when you take into account the various systemic failures, sociocultural expectations, among other factors that lead people down such a path. The characters were very real and relatable. One thing this book helped me think about is the greed (and colonizing ways) of the typically white victims that makes them so susceptible to the frauds. Overall, quite the insightful and enjoyable read.
Something that stood out: it was so authentically Nigerian especially in terms of the kinds of expressions the Nwaubani uses in driving home her points.
Overall Rating:🖋🖋🖋🖋🖋 (out of 5 fountain pens).
Recommend or nah: I wholeheartedly recommend it. It’s an extremely important story with many lessons.
