Overall Impressions: Absolutely loved this book! It was quite the treat. Felt like a fresh story on existing challenges women faced back in the day when the status quo was widely accepted. Of course, in this case, the main character is a white woman, so although the other made mention of Civil Rights and how racism was/is quite boneheaded, the book’s outlook is white woman centred. This is not a critique of it at all. Just an acknowledgment of what it is so folks don’t go into it expecting anything more. I thought it would take a longer time to get through it but halfway through, I found myself unable to put it down and finished it in a few hours. The story is full of tragedy and painful moments, including, trigger warning, a sexual assault. However, Garmus had a way of incorporating humor and lighthearted moments to ease the traumatic turns. This book had me wishing I had pursued a career in science, which is great because more women need that pull into the field. I will be recommending it as a read for young girls who have the desire but are hesitant to enter certain tough fields. I’m currently watching the Apple+ TV adaptation and I have mixed feelings about it as they changed quite a bit of details but will wait till I complete it to full assess how I feel.
Something that stood out: I loved how she narrated parts of the story in the voice of the dog in this book who was quite key to the story. I also loved that the dog was named Six Thirty.
