Overall Impressions: Absolutely loved this book! Once it is Tati/TM Richardson, you know I am reading and most likely enjoying it. This was no exception. Read it as a palate cleanser following the devastations of my last read, which I also enjoyed. I needed a book that gave hope and joy and all the feels. This book did just that and then some. I love the representation Tati brings to her books. She shows that Black people are not one dimensional. I love her particular niche of bringing us the love and dating experiences of Black professionals especially in their 30s and older. I don’t love that just because it is relatable to my current phase of life but also because it doesn’t get the kind of representation it deserves in the publishing world. Tati’s characters are very familiar in the sense that I can see myself and my loved ones in them but they are also unique in their own endearing ways. She paired a sports journalist with an optometrist here and made their love story come together so beautifully.
Something that stood out: I loved how she gave the lead character different love interests and different possibilities. It’s not often that we get to see women have such freedom to choose and it be such a natural thing. These books serve as a necessary reminder to never settle for less than you want and to open yourself to the abundance of good choices that will come your way once you stop internalizing terrible outcomes lest they manifest as reality.
