Overall Impressions: ever since I left Christianity as a belief system, I’ve been curious to learn more about various African Traditional Religions and belief systems. I’ve been following Ehime Ora on social media for a while now and connected to her various posts on the topic. She’s an Ifa priestess. So when she released this book, I got it as my introduction to the belief system. This book met my expectations in this respect. A central theme is ancestral connection and veneration, specifically how we tap into their wisdom and guidance even after they have transitioned. I really enjoyed how she confronted imperialist and colonial demonizations of our belief systems and pushes her audience to think differently. It was quite the insightful read. It was interesting to learn how Ifa doesn’t have the concept of a devil. This book made the belief system quite accessible. You don’t need to be initiated into Ifa to lean on its wisdoms.
Something that stood out: how every chapter ended with a poem. It was nice to see the author’s other creative side used to convey key lessons.
Overall Rating: 🖋🖋🖋🖋 (out of 5 fountain pens).
Recommend or nah: I absolutely recommend it! It’s a very helpful guide and insightful read for anyone looking to better understand African Traditional Religions.
