Book Review: The House of Eve

Own or Borrowed: own, purchased from The WordPlayce Bookstore

Overall Impressions: I really enjoyed this book even though its themes such as forced adoptions, racism and prejudice, misogyny, among others, are tough. It is very well written. Parts of the story are inspired by Johnson’s own family history. I greatly appreciate her bringing often neglected histories of Black people to the fore. Found myself really thinking about these characters as though they are very real people I’ve met and with whom I’ve had conversations. I really wanted to hug Ruby in particular. Overall, a heart rendering read but with moments of joy and hope for better futures for Eleanor and Ruby.
Something that stood out: the choice to tell Ruby’s story in first person while telling Eleanor’s in third person yet still demonstrating how they’re inextricably linked.
Overall Rating: 🖋🖋🖋🖋🖋 (out of 5 fountain pens).
