Book Review: The Opportunity: An Age Gap Romance

Overall Impressions: This is the third and final book in the Secrets series by Richardson. I have read and reviewed the previous 2 books ie The Oath and The Offer. The Opportunity brings us the story of Nadine, the third in a trio of friends navigating unconventional love and relationships. I forgot this book was going to be about her since her character was so judgy and conservativeĀ in the other two books. By bringing us her story, we learn why she was that way and she gets the much needed redemption in her own story where she learns to accept herself. Overall, a good read. I was initially nervous about it being an age gap romance but thankfully the younger character was above 25 years old and her relationship is with another woman. This doesnāt necessarily justify the age gap but highlights that there may be some nuance that heterosexuals may miss when assessing a sapphic love story. Ultimately, this book teases out some important themes for necessary conversations within the Black community about queerphobia and the extensive damage it causes. This book provides some healing for those who have had to hide who they are for fear of judgment.
Something that stood out: I loved the fact that we kept up with the women from the other two books and saw how their stories wrapped up nicely. I also like that Tati is open to continuing the series one day and hope that she brings us the stories from the views of the men of the series who are quite swoon worthy.
Overall Rating: šššš (out of 5 fountain pens).
